Meals on Wheels in Boroondara
I recently met with Jill Moylan, Food Services Supervisor from the City of Boroondara's Meals on Wheels program. They are located behind the Senior Citizens 'Peppercorn Club' in Hawthorn. The Meals on Wheels program is HACC funded.
Whilst on my visit, I met a lovely lady, Beverly, who has been volunteering with the City of Boroondara's Meals on Wheels for over 40 years. She has seen many people come and go in her time, but still enjoys giving her mornings to volunteer. Beverly takes a cut flower from her own garden to give to each client on her round.
Wednesday 31 August was National Meals on Wheels day. It is a day to celebrate the fantastic efforts of Meals on Wheels volunteers in helping the elderly and people with disabilities in the community.
This year, there was a recognition dinner at Leonda by the Yarra. Volunteers were presented with recognition awards according to the number of years they have been volunteering. Over 500 volunteers from all Meals on Wheels agencies across Boroondara attended the dinner.
Jill has over 120 volunteers working in the Kew and Hawthorn area, however, she is constantly seeking new volunteers to assist with delivering the meals to clients' homes or to function as jockeys in the car.
I am very grateful to Jill for taking the time to show me around and introduce me to many of her wonderful volunteers. For further information, you can contact Jill on 03 9278 4743.
